The dreaded Detox!! It is a love hate relationship!! For those of you who are just starting with clean eating, or maybe you had a few to many cheat days. There are a few things you should expect but do not fear!
When I first started it was from day one! There was no just dipping the toe into the water so to speak! I was determined and motivated to change my diet and nutrition!! Of course there were times where it was tough, and I fell off the wagon, but I put my big girl panties on and continued on!! Getting started is not a fun process. Even when you fall off the wagon you have to go through it all over again and it to is not fun! The outcome though is well worth it!!
I noticed this a LOT when I started the 21 Day Fix. It was the most uncomfortable and discouraging part of starting my health and wellness journey with clean eating. It started with the crankiness! Oh I was an evil mommy! No one could say anything without me biting their head off! Having been a sufferer of IBS I found I was in the bathroom a lot more than I wanted to be, heck more than I had ever been! I then began to develp headaches! All these symptoms led to being tired, and feeling rundown! I honestly was about to give up after the 1st week! I was messaging everyone to find out if maybe there was something wrong!
It’s detox, and it’s not comfortable. It makes you want to run to the nearest bag of chips or head out to the nearest Dairy Queen!
If you are determined and giving 100% into clean eating, and your normal food intake had a significant amount of processed foods, sugar, additives, and white flour in it, then you need to also brace yourself for the first few days. It is not going to be fun but everyone is different. I have heard from some that they never expeienced anything, but for many it’s not a fun experience. ( DON”T RUN, KEEP READING, PROMISE THE LOVE WILL SHOW)
How long it will last really determines on how unhealthy your diet was before starting. Everyone is different so there is really not set time frame! It could last anywhere from a few days to about 2 weeks! The best thing you can do is to mentally prepare yourself that it is going to happen and just go with it!
Midset is very important! If you can get into that determination mindset and just get through the first 3-4 days, it will be much easier after that. Your body will adjust and realx and you will begin to stop craving stuff! The biggest thing that is helpful and that really helped me and still does today 16 months later is just to avoid ALL added sugars. Even clean or natural ones for these first few days. A couple pieces of fruit is fine, but read every ingredient list and avoid any type of sugar.
Once the first few days even the first week passes you realize and finally see the LOVE in this!! IT is amazing!! You really don’t crave much of anything. And if you do, it’s a mental craving rather than a physical one. At least that’s been my experience.
Also, this is important!! Be sure you are eating enough calories through out the day for you! So if you are active doing a workout program, be sure that you are getting that calorie intact in!! Keep those raw veggies stocked!! Dont’ stress over the portions the first few days the key is to flush out all those toxins and junk first!! I want to stress here!! If you are under a Doctors care please PLEASE consult with your doctor first! Once the initial shock with your body and withdrawals are over ( 2-5 days), then I focus on calories and portions. But the main thing is to not let yourself get hungry.
Lastly, you HAVE To drink that water!!! Water is going to help you flush that junk out of your body!! So stock up on the extra TP, you are going to need it!
It’s definitely a yucky process, and if you’ve been through it, you know exactly what I mean. Our bodies are not made to consume processed foods. They are created to make food addicting! They are created to make you want more! There is reason for this madness!! In creating processed foods and adding all that junk to make them addicting, it puts $$$ in to big cooporations! Removing these processed foods from your eating plan is no small undertaking. So don’t diminish what you are going through if you experience it. And if any medical issue arises during this period, please do seek medical help.
Detox ain’t for the wimps! You have to be strong, and you have to really want this! Here are some of the symptoms my readers have told me about:
- Frequent and/or different bowel movements
- Passing gas
- Flu-like symptoms
- General crankiness
So why put ourselves through such turmoil!! Because it is worth it!! You will find yourself feeling more energetic! You will have less bloating! So you will see that belly start to flatten out a bit! You will be more positive and yes even smile more!! If you are successful over time you could even possibly reduce or reverse some health issues!! I can only speak from my own experience because I am not a nutritionist or medical professional, but I along with others I know have reduced our blood pressure, cholesterol, and for me even my Fibromyalgia! So to me it was worth the craziness of the first week to receive such amazing benefits!!
